Some households use liquid petroleum gas to heat their homes if they are not connected to mains gas. The main difference between mains gas and LPG central heating is that LPG is delivered by road and stored in a tank, which you buy or rent from a supplier. Our local supplier is Adams Gas in Margate.

LPG central heating is normally used in a wet heating system where an LPG-fired boiler heats water, which provides central heating through radiators and hot water through the taps. Some boilers designed for mains gas can be converted to use LPG.

LPG is a highly efficient fuel, so you get a good return on every unit of energy. Improved efficiency of approximately 90% compared to modern condensing boilers, which use hot flue gases that are wasted in a standard boiler. It is relatively straight forward to replace a modern condensing boiler for an LPG boiler.

It is a good idea to have a system that monitors the amount of gas in your tank and automatically notify’s your supplier when it is running low so that you don’t run out. Installing an LPG system from scratch can be expensive. The storage tank can also be unsightly, but you can choose an underground tank. The boilers need servicing annually to ensure that they run efficiently and last as long as they should.

There are two types of LPG – Propane and Butane. They are not interchangeable. Valves and fittings are different to avoid confusion. Propane is suitable for exterior storage and use. So Propane is used for commercial and domestic heating, hot water and cooking. Butane is commonly used for leisure and portable heaters.

Benefits of Cooking with LPG

Speed – Provides immediate heat on ignition, without the need for any warm up period.

Control – It produces heat that responds instantly and distributes the heat more evenly across the base of cooking implements.

Cleanliness – It burns efficiently with no black smoke, it leaves no marks on cooking implements, making washing-up easier.
